How Fortunate We’ve Been in the Face of Such an Unfortunate Situation

It’s been one year.

One whole year.

Today is December 4, the one year anniversary since we lost the brightest light in many of our lives.

It’s been one year without Abi.

I don’t particularly know why I have naturally fixated on significant dates so much in the past year, but my introspection posits it may have something to do with the thought of not having any new ones that feel whole.

I find it particularly difficult to capture my head space in full, so for now I want to share something even more special. Today, Episode 07 of Better Out Loud is live, and I’m joined by my dear friend John Mayer to reflect on the past year of grief, healing, community, and everything else in the middle. John reflected on it by saying, “how fortunate we’ve been in the face of such an unfortunate situation,” and I think that describes the past year exceptionally well.

I found myself grounded and re-centered beyond belief, as I often do with John. I imagine you will, too. I am grateful to John as authentically shares his reflections on the last few years and particularly the past year after losing his wife, saying yes to as much as possible, and soaking up the good that remains in the world.  And if you’re just jumping in, I recommend starting from Episode 01 when you can to get an even deeper picture of this project!

And last but certainly not least, to Abi’s dearest loved ones: may you feel the sun on your face, may you catch the flutter of a hummingbird outside your window, and may you feel her permanent love embedded in your spirit.

In loving memory of Abi Pereira Mayer (December 28, 1990-December 4, 2018).
You can read her Eulogy and learn more about her story on Two Flounders.

To support a program near and dear to Abi’s heart, consider donating to First Descents on Abi’s fundraising page! This program gave Abi a grand outdoor adventure and 2020 marks the commemoration of 20 years for their organization.
